Head of Health Records Department

 

A report covering the activities of the Health Records Department within the period of assumption of leadership of Dr. M.A. Yaro as the Medical Director of National Ear Care Centre, Kaduna. During the period under review, the Health Records Department performed various tasks that were expected from the department such as Medical records documentation, Filing and storage, Data capture and retrieval and Medical records processing. The Medical Records Department is primarily concerned with documentation of patient care, by ensuring that all personnel comply with regulations regarding documentation of patient care, the Medical Records department supports various medical staff committees by providing data from medical records. Medical Records management has become an integral activity of the hospital management; the department provides multiple benefits not only to the patients but also to running a hospital efficiently and also responsible for health records and information management which are useful for Management decision making, planning, and allocation of resources as well as attending to requests from researchers.

HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT

STAFF STRENGTH/RECRUITMENT

The department now has a staff strength of forty four (44) comprising fifteen (23) senior staff and twenty one (21) junior staff. As at August 2018 the staff strength was thirty one (31), which implies that the staff strength increased by 34%. We have enough personnel that cover all the units under the department.

TRAINING

The health records department benefitted immensely from Management staff development and training policies, thereby increasing HIM professionals in the department, 6 staff are pursuing professional diploma and HND programme at the Kaduna State School of Health Information Management, a staff is running HND (HIM) programme at ABUTH, Zaria. One of our staff just concluded a Bsc programme in Statistics at ABU. Four (4) staff where sponsored for HRORBN MCPD programme. The department is making concerted efforts in having more professionals, aimed at assisting the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria in routing out non-professionals in the field of HIM.

SERVICE DELIVERY

There were increase in clinical services during the period under review, at the A&E a total of 23,147 patient’s attendance was recorded and Specialist ENT Clinic has 11,043 patient’s attendance. The overall patients attendance in 2019 was 34,190 on the average the clinic recorded an average monthly patient attendance of 2,849.
