Recent Advances in Surgical Services At National Ear Care Center Kaduna

National Ear Care Centre is the only mono-specialty Otorhinolaryngology hospital in Nigeria established to provide holistic ear, nose and throat care, manpower training and research. The Centre has been pioneering innovative surgical treatment modalitiesin ENT in Nigeria especially in the areas of endoscopic management of ear, nose and throat diseases. Recently, commencement of 2 new surgical treatment modalities has been facilitated by the Dr Mustapha AbubakarYaro led management. They are:

Cochlear implantation

This surgical procedure for the treatment of profound hearing loss is not regularly available in Nigeria and requires patients to travel abroad. The hospital has commenced a robust cochlear implant program in collaboration with an implant manufacturerto provide evaluation, surgery, post operative speech rehabilitation and device servicing, making it the only center in Nigeria with a full package. The collaboration also include training of Surgeons, Audiologists, speech therapists and other support staff, making it sustainable and eventually run fully by local staff. Already, 8 implant surgeries have been performed and the patients are at various stages of speech rehabilitation.

Following the commencement of Cochlear implant programme in the Centre, the entire services of mapping, switch on and auditory-verbal therapy are being rendered in the audiology department with technical assistance from the Med-EI staff.

Laser Surgeries

Laser surgery is one of the most effective modality of treatment in a number of Otolaryngologic conditions. The Centre is pioneering, and has progressively developed capacity for laser surgery especially in endoscopic laser treatment of early laryngeal cancer, laryngeal papilloma, laryngeal stenosis and other benign laryngeal conditions. Two new diode laser machines were recently procured to enhance service delivery.
