Medical Laboratory Science professionals are vital healthcare detectives, uncovering and providing laboratory information from laboratory analysis that assist in patient diagnosis and treatment, as well as in disease monitoring or prevention (maintenance of health). We use sophisticated biomedical instrumentation and technology, computers, and methods requiring manual dexterity to perform laboratory testing on blood and various body fluids. Laboratory testing encompasses various disciplines: Clinical chemistry, Hematology and Blood Transfusion science, Immunology, Immunohaematology, Medical Microbiology, and of recent Molecular diagnosis.

Medical laboratory science professionals generate accurate laboratory data that are needed to aid in detecting various pathologic conditions such as cancer, diabetes and identification of bacteria or viruses that causes infection as well as in detecting drugs of abuse(Toxicology). Approximately 70% of medical decisions, diagnosis, treatment and evaluations, are based on the interpretations of laboratory test results. In addition, we monitor testing quality and consult with other members of the healthcare team. The information that a medical laboratory scientist gives to the doctor influences the medical treatment a patient will receive. This is buttressed by the experiences witnessed in recent Corona virus pandemic (Covid-19) throughout the world in early part of the year 2020.

EQUIPMENT:

Various modern equipment were procured for effective service delivery which cut across most of the laboratory units, for example chemical pathology unit has Selexion machine for test such as glycated haemoglobin, Thyriod function test, PSA test and of recent Automated Chemistry Analyser etc. The Haematology unit has q-Lab. Electrometer for quick use for clotting disorder of PT/PTTK Test Autohaematology analyser(5 part) and coagulometer machine. Of recent, the Histopathology unit got delivery of all equipment required for takeoff of all histopathology investigations (both cytology and histology). Example of such equipment include Automatic tissue processor, rotary microtome, paraffin embedding center etc. However based on the dream of the Medical Director toward quality and productivity many more equipment such as microscopes, automated equipment for hematology and chemical pathology unit, Autoclave for Medical microbiology unit are being purchased and delivered to the department for effective service delivery.

Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory

In addition all equipment required for the take off of the molecular diagnostic laboratory has been delivered and presently training is ongoing. The Medical and Molecular Laboratory has been fully equipped with solar inverters for uninterrupted service delivery. The above has immensely helped in the smooth and effective running of the department to mention but a few. The management’s vision of ensuring quality service delivery led to the procurement of 10,000 KVA inverter, 1,500 AMP and 5,000 KVA inverter, 1,500 AMP stabilizers and UPS deployed to the Haematology and Chemical Pathology Units respectively, this has helped to safeguard our equipment from power fluctuations and equipment breakdown thus helping in area of improved turnaround time, reagent conservation, operators satisfaction and generally improved in quality.

There has been collaboration between the Medical Laboratory Department and the Biomedical Unit for both preventive and corrective maintenance of the various equipment to enhance the life span of the equipment as part of management annual operational plan for the centre.

The Medical Laboratory is one of the departments that has received support of the management that led to the upgrade of the department to a real tertiary hospital laboratory.
