The Medical Director
Since its establishment, the Centre had two substantive Medical Directors and four Medical Directors in acting capacity.
The first substantive Medical Director was Professor Babagana M. Ahmad from 18th September 2002 to 17th September 2013. The second Medical Director was Late Dr. Aminu Bakari from 3rd July 2014 to 26th June 2017.
The following Medical Directors served the hospital in acting capacity at various times.
- Professor R.A. Okeowo as the pioneer Acting Medical Director -1999 to 2002
- Dr. Mohammed G. Mainasara – 20th September 2013 to 2nd December 2013
- Dr. Abimiku S. Labaran – 2nd December 2013 to 16th July 2014
- Dr. Umar S. Grema – 26th June 2017 to September 2018
The present Medical Director, Dr. Mustapha A. Yaro was appointed on the 16th August 2018 as the 3rd substantive Medical Director and reappointed for the 2nd term on 18th August 2022.
Who is Dr. Mustapha Abubakar Yaro?

Dr. Mustapha Abubakar Yaro was born on 13th March 1969 in Katsina State Nigeria.
His Educational / Professional Pursuit:
- L.E.A Primary School Unguwan Rimi Kaduna between 1975-1981 where he obtained Primary School Certificate.
- Joined Government Secondary School Dutsinma between 1981-1983.
- Rimi College Kaduna from 1983-1986 and obtained his West African Examination Council Certificate.
- College of Advanced Studies Zaria 1986-1988 obtained Interim Joint Matriculation Board Exams (IJMB).
- Ahmadu Bello University Zaria 1989-1998 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
- West African College of Surgeons in 2005-2011 where he obtain a Certificate as a Fellow of West African College of Surgeons (FWACS).

His Briefing upon completion of 1st Tenure as Medical Director, NECC, Kaduna
Let me give thanks to Almighty Allaah for the opportunity given to me to serve humanity through the position of Medical Director at National Ear Centre Kaduna. My 1st appointment by His Excellency the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was on the 16th August, 2018 and the appointment was renewed to serve for another 4years from 18th August, 2022.
The National Ear Care Centre Kaduna was established in 1999 as a mono specialty hospital with the core mandate of addressing the increasing incidence and burden of Hearing loss and disabilities as observed by WHO amongst developing countries, Nigeria inclusive. Other services provided include treatment of diseases of the nose, throat, head and neck. The Centre also conduct training and research in ENT related areas.
Since its inception to date, the Centre has established the following schools.
- School of Post Basic Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) Nursing.
- School of Audiology.
- Newly established School of Health Information Management by the present management.
The four years journey has been quite challenging but rewarding also as it has given me the opportunity to contribute my quota to the development of the Centre.
The Centre has witnessed a lot of infrastructural development during these years to cater for the growing number of patients and also the demand for improved services. These works ranged from the construction of new Centre’s gate, construction of internal road and drainages, landscaping, modern walkway and installation of solar lights, Construction of one story Modular Theatre, Construction of one story ENT clinic, Construction of one story Pharmacy building, Construction of one story student hostel, Construction of 200 capacity Lecture Auditorium, and completion and equipping of ENT Research building.
To boost the security of the Centre, CCTV cameras were installed at various points, inverters and solar panels also installed at various places such as Wards, Laboratory, Radiology and Accident and Emergency Department.
More specialized services have commenced in the Centre, notably cochlear implant surgery and laser surgery. This has greatly reduced the medical tourism in the field of ENT and has provided hope to the profound to total hearing impaired Nigerians.
We have given priority on procuring modern equipment. We met a Medical Laboratory that operates with analogue equipment’s but during the period under review; the whole department has been equipped with automated machines and rendering test that hitherto were not provided in the Centre. The Radiology, Audiology, Wards, Accident and Emergency departments have all benefited from modern facilities.
During this period, we have introduced electronic medical record and consultation. (EMR, e- consultation and pharmacy).
The Centre has organized various training programs, workshops, and have released staff for various in-service trainings.
Residency Training has recorded virtually hundred percent success rate in its exam, and the Centre has full accreditation in both West African College of Surgeons and National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria. It is during this tenure that the School of Health Information Management was established, program has commenced in the school with full accreditation.
The School of Post Basic Otorhinolaryngology has also witnessed tremendous success and has graduated three set of nurses despite the challenges caused by the pandemic of coronavirus.
We have maintained good cordial relationship with the staff and the unions by enhancing staff welfare through ensuring payments of staff entitlements such as Duty travel allowances, promotion and conversion/upgrading of eligible staff, Sponsorship for workshops, accident free bonuses to our drivers, and payment of Uniform allowances to our Nurses etc. The Centre has twice organized staff consultative forum were issues pertaining to staff welfare were discussed and outstanding staff were rewarded with certificates and various gifts.
We have engaged in community services were various outreach programs have been organized leading to distribution of free drugs, free surgeries and dispensing of free hearing aids.
For the first time we have taken our services to the six Geopolitical zones of the country were we conducted capacity building and distribution of ENT diagnostic kits.
We have enjoyed the support of the Federal Ministry of Health for given us the guidance and impetus for all the successes recorded and especially the Hospital Services Department. During this period, the Federal Government has invested a lot in healthcare by increasing allocation to the hospitals and timely release of funds. Our overheads have been increased and also inclusion of budget line for outsource services. The response of the Government and Ministry of Health during the Covid- 19 period has been quite commendable. I must commend the Minister of Health, Dr E. Osagie Ehanire and the Minister of State for Health, Senator Adeleke. 0. Mamora; who is our direct supervisor for the enormous support and advice they render to the hospital. In fact the health sector has witnessed remarkable transformation under their leadership.
I must also commend the support of the Board of Management of National Ear Care Centre under the chairmanship of Hon. Garba Sani Dankani for rolling out clear-cut policies and together with a management driven by a passion for timely results, the Centre has made
giant strides in all areas as enumerated above. The management and the Board are also close to achieving the Centre’s enabling Act which we expect to be passed before the end of the 9th Assembly.
